Around the Rock: Local Lime Still Doing it Right

Welcome to “Around the Rock,” a weekly peek into my culinary adventures and a means to keep you in the loop with all the happenings in our Little Rock food scene.
Color me a tad unimpressed with the award winning Garden sandwich from Jimmy’s Serious Sandwiches. Envision a creamy spinach dip generously slathered between two pieces of pumpernickel bread ($7.55). I’d rate the sandwich as fair, certainly not bad, but not one I’d crave– like say any one of the number of options at nearby Hillcrest Artisan Meats.
Unfortunately, those same “middle-of-the-road” sentiments were echoed for my inaugural visit to Yaya’s Euro Bistro. The crab cake appetizer disappointed, due to a complete lack of lump crab meat and an overabundance of fillers. Also, my salmon salad, topped with a mile high pile of fried shoestring potatoes, was fairly pedestrian.
Have you checked out Butcher & Public at the Bernice Garden Farmers Market yet? If not, you’re missing out. My Herb + Chili sausage sandwich ($7), topped with mustard and slaw, was delightful.
When you’re finished polishing off the sandwich, go check out the Laughing Stock Farm booth just a few yards away. I did recently and ended up with the cutest little Lunchbox peppers. I ended up slicing and dicing those bad boys before tossing them in a wonderful potato hash.
Props to my friend and expert hummus/pesto maker Jeremy Rhodes of Geek Eats. Jeremy’s product can now be found at various locations throughout the city, including BJ’s Plant and Produce in Sherwood, Argenta Market in North Little Rock, and Terry’s Finer Foods in Hillcrest. I currently recommend his spicy sriracha hummus.
I enjoy eating at Local Lime every few months, not just to experience the delicious food and hip atmosphere, but to see if the restaurant is still on the top of its game. It is. I’ve never had anything but great lunches/dinners at Local Lime and this week was no different. The chips and salsa, potato and zucchini tacos, and service were all top-notch.
In terms of upcoming events, the Arkansas Local Food Network is having its 2nd Annual Little Rock Local Food Tour–Saturday, November 9th, 11am-5pm. The event starts at the Hillcrest Farmers Market. Attendees will tour several local food sites in the Hillcrest neighborhood, including: Mylo’s Coffee Company, Hillcrest Artisan Meats, Pie Cycle, Pulaski Heights Elementary Garden, and others. The Little Rock Urban Farming will end the day with a locally sourced meal and live music. Proceeds from the tour will support ALFN’s FRESH Local Food Directory and Community Fund. Tickets are $25 pp and can be purchased online.
Finally, you won’t want to miss this weekend’s Halloween Harvest A La Mode, featuring the culinary delights of Loblolly Creamery and Little Rock Pie Cycle. On Saturday, October 26 (from 6-8 p.m.) at The Green Corner Store & Soda Fountain, the dynamic duo teams up to bring patrons the very best in ice-cream topped pies. For more details, check out the event page.
