At the Corner Partners with Local Firefighters to Help Support People with Burn Injuries

Eating good food is what we are all about here. Occasionally that good food mixes with a really special cause and creates something even more special on a plate. The folks over At the Corner seem to get that well, and they are back with another really great cause based dining opportunity.
At the Corner has some rather amazing brunches, and each weekend for their Saturday and Sunday brunch come up with five specials. This weekend they are partnering with the North Little Rock Firefighters and the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge to raise money and awareness for Camp Sunshine.
“We are really excited about this particular opportunity for us and our Little Rock community,” co-owner Helen Grace King tells us. “Our sous chef, Chris Busick, is a former firefighter so this subject truly hits home.”
Camp Sunshine is a program that is a part of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s burn center and provides a free four day camp for burn survivors to develop connections with others that have similar injuries. The camp takes place at Camp Aldersgate annually on the third weekend in August.
Best of all, the camp is aimed at building lifelong connections and allows both youth and adults to attend. The age range is from 4 to 16 years. At 16 a camper becomes a Junior Staff member, at 18 they choose to be a Counselor in Training or a Volunteer in Training. Camp is ongoing for as long as the survivor wishes to attend.

“This is tremendous for the efforts of the community to support the Firefighters in their quest with Camp Sunshine. This is a camp for children who have survived a significant burn injury, where they can relax and be themselves with others traveling the same road of healing,” Camp director Gretta Wilkinson tells us. “It provides them with four days they are free of all the social stigma that results from their scars. They have fun and are with friends who do not judge them from the way they look. Counsellors are FFs, ACH staff and Adult Burn Survivors. We transition them from Burn Victim to Burn Survivor.”

Supporting this mission is even better with some fantastic food. The kitchen team from At the Corner worked up some really great specials for the event.
First up is Overhaul Pancakes. These feature a graham cracker pancakes topped w/ triple chocolate sauce, house made charred marshmallows & chocolate shavings. The Hook & Ladder Hash has roasted strip loin, sautéed peppers, hash browns, served over a biscuit & topped w/ a sunny up egg & béarnaise sauce. The Fire Down Below Grit Bowl comes with roasted lamb, spinach, peppers, onions & pecorino cheese grits & tomato sauce. Next up is the Engine 3 Cereal featuring a house made All-Bran, milk & fresh fruit. Finally, the Firefighter Probie Egg White Frittata is served up with lamb & veggies.
A portion of all proceeds from brunch sales go to support Camp Sunshine. Happy brunching
