You may remember early last month where we encouraged you all to go support the local non-profit Lucie’s Place through a shake special at Big Orange. The fundraising is over and representatives from Big Orange were able to present Lucie’s Place with a check for $5,500.
Throughout the month of February Big Orange was able to sell over 1,000 rainbow cake shakes at the two locations for a portion of the money raised. The rest came from individual donations from people who wanted to go above and beyond the shake itself.
“We were amazed at the response from people,” Big Orange owner Scott McGehee says. “Keep in mind, this was for just one shake. People made a big effort to get out and support this cause.”
The concept comes after earlier this year Katherine Johnson, a shake maker and busser at Big Orange Midtown lost hope and decided to end her life. She would have been 26 this month. Many of the Big Orange crew organized fundraisers to raise money in her memory and donate the money to Lucie’s Place.
Lucie’s Place works to better the lives of young homeless LGBT in Arkansas between the ages of 18-25. Lucie’s Place has a number of outreach initiatives including providing bus passes, cell phones, toiletries, food, clothing, and counseling. The biggest mission, however, is a center where people can come in downtown Little Rock to not feel like they are alone in the world.
The money raised from Big Orange will go to support general operations. For those of you looking to still support, Lucie’s Place is seeking donations to build a house for homeless LGBT young adults, donations can be made here.
