Brace yourselves, Little Rock, there’s a new brunch game in town and it’s everything you need for hangover cures. Even if you don’t drink – the food is a solid, tasty option worth crossing the river for.
We first saw Four Quarter Bar open nearly a year ago. The late-night, music venue has some of the best underrated food in town. During the nightly midnight to 1:30 a.m. dinner rush, fans crawl in looking for in-house smoked meats and delectable hash. (If you haven’t yet, please try the Spam option. You can thank me later.)
Dinner aside, this past weekend marked a trial run for brunch. Four Quarter’s Conan Robinson wanted to keep things low key to gage the reception. We ventured out to take a peak at the menu and weren’t disappointed.
First off, drinks. The Bloody Mary is where it’s at. Robinson batch-makes them, and they are reminiscent of a good NOLA-infused drink. Think spicy, balanced, and topped with a pork rind. The mimosas are reasonably priced at $3 per drink – and they’re not drowning in OJ. If you’d rather, you can also order a beer, or go drink free.
Now for the food.
The menu is simple and packed with a mix of traditional items, creative takes on old favorites, and a few sweet options.
First up if you’re hungry, try The Four Quarter Breakfast. You get two pancakes, two eggs your way, two slices of bacon, two slices of toast, crispy breakfast potatoes, and grilled spam. Plus, you get the choice of a Mimosa or a PBR tall-boy. I couldn’t eat it all – but I tried – and it’s easily tops in the Rock for hangover cures right now.
If you’re not as hungry, try The Trolley Benedict – an already fan-favorite take on the classic. It comes with ‘trolley wheels’ – pulled pork breaded with green onions and then deep fried, a nice breakaway from the typical English Muffin. On top you’ll find perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise, and all-around goodness.
Don’t forget the sweets.
The pancakes are light and fluffy, slightly cakey, and everything you remember from your childhood. Plus you can get them plain or with your choice of filling. We have it on good authority that the Breakfast Burrito is worth a try, so we’re going to check it out next time.
For a nice unassuming, no-frills brunch packed with flavor, make Four Quarter your destination. Robinson hinted at the menu undergoing some changes as time passes, but either way, you won’t be disappointed with your food. Don’t let the smoky interior stop you either, as the patio out back is a literal hidden gem.
