Growlers: Core Argenta Closes, Stone's Throw Debuts Homebrew Porter

Core Brewing Company has closed its public house location in the Argenta neighborhood. The taproom’s last day of business was last Monday. Core has not given a reason for the closure, but having two public houses within three miles of each other had to be a factor. Core says its new SoMa public house location will stay open for business. Core Argenta opened in the former Starving Artist Café in March 2016. The taproom enjoyed some popularity early on, particularly when the kitchen put forth a strong menu within months of opening. However, Core soon scaled back on the food menu to focus on its brews. Core Brewing had a very strong 2018, and I look forward to enjoying more of their beers at the SoMa taproom this year.
We love our homebrew community here at Rock City Eats, and this week Stone’s Throw Brewing has a special beer out that started as a homebrew recipe. Molly’s Pre-Prohibition Porter is going on tap for Stone’s Throw’s #NewBrewFriday. This porter recipe came from Rory Bradney, who won the Central Arkansas Fermenters’ competition last month. Bradney beat out close to a dozen submissions to have his beer brewed at Stone’s Throw. It goes on tap this Friday at 4 p.m.
Lost Forty Brewing has a brand new pilot beer on tap today. This weeks’ Freshcut Monday release is Blackberry Apple Ale, and it should go great with this streak of warm weather we’ve been enjoying lately. Lost Forty combined blackberry puree with fresh apples for a light ale that features a crisp finish thanks to the inclusion of Arkansas rice in the mash. This is a small batch; you’re not going to find any cans of this one. However, it is available by the glass and in growlers to go starting today at 4 p.m.
Rebel Kettle appears on track to reopen Saturday after closing last week for some renovations, which is a few days later than we reported last week. The taproom bar is getting an upgrade and will include a new crowler station when the project is complete. When Rebel Kettle does open, it will be with three new brews on tap:

  • Whole Lotta Rosé, a rosé wine-inspired sour ale
  • C Street Block #12 New England-style IPA
  • It’s Chocolate, It’s Mint, It’s Delicious; a mint chocolate chip cream stout

Head brewer John Lee says construction is going well right now. We’ll let you know if there are any delays in getting Rebel Kettle back open.
And late last night, the Hot Springs Craft Beer Festival emailed out some new details about this year’s event. For 2019, the festival is an entire Hot Springs Craft Beer Weekend running May 10-12. It will feature a five-beer 5k race, a bicycle poker ride, the craft beer festival itself and a Hot Springs Beer Brunch the following day. The Spa City Blues Society, which runs the event, is also holding raffle drawings for multiple “Arkansas Beercation” packages that include accommodations, tickets and some extras. The information should all be up on the Spa City Blues Society’s website in the coming weeks.
