A unique collaboration effort goes on tap today as Flyway and Stone’s Throw Brewing debut a beer they’re calling The Mighty Wing. The idea actually came from customers at Soulfish Café in downtown Little Rock, where Stone’s Throw’s Jar the Floor peach saison and Flyway’s Bluewing Berry Wheat were on tap together. Customers began ordering a half-and-half blend of the two beers, and Soulfish management contacted the breweries to let them know that the combination actually tasted pretty good. So the two breweries put their recipes together and are releasing the final product today. This is a pretty exciting collaboration, one that marries two local breweries through an idea discovered by customers at a separate business.
By the way, Flyway this past week installed its new 30-barrel fermenting tank, which should help it better meet demand for its massively popular Bluewing while keeping its other brews going strong. And Stone’s Throw on Thursday holds its monthly beer dinner at The Southern Gourmasian. Tickets for that one are available for $50 per person or $90 for a couple.
Well, it had to return. After selling out in just 14 minutes (!) on its surprisingly popular debut, Diamond Bear’s Stripper Sweat makes an encore appearance this Friday at 5 p.m. The recipe has been tweaked some as well. New head brewer Nathan Greubel created this version using mango and passionfruit, and the whole thing once again gets a heavy dose of food-grade glitter. Who would have thought a glitter beer would create such a popular event? If the first release party is any indication, you’re going to want to be there at least 15 minutes early just to make sure you get a glass before it runs out.
Sour beer fans are in for a treat at Rebel Kettle this week. For its 4:30 Thursday event, the brewery is releasing its super-limited, 16-month, mixed-fermentation Golden Sour Ale. This one was fermented with four strains of yeast to create a ton of stone fruit and spice notes. This one will only be available in six-ounce pours, and with the small batch it will likely go very quickly. Also, Rebel Kettle is bringing back Beer Yoga after its debut event saw more than 50 people attend. The yoga session is $10 and includes your first beer. Bring your mat and towel, and enjoy yoga the way it was meant to be experienced. With beer. Doors open at 9, the session starts at 10.
My favorite special releases at Lost Forty Brewing are usually the ones where the kitchen pairs a food special to go with the new brew. That’s happening today with the return of Lost Forty’s Blackberry American Wheat for the brewery’s regular Freshcut Mondays event. This blackberry beer is a pretty easy drinker that should be ideal for hot weather. And to celebrate the release, Lost Forty’s Cash Ashley has created a house-smoked Huli Huli-inspired chicken entrée and a Mixed Berry Crisp that uses local blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. The event kicks off at 4 p.m. Lost Forty is making Blackberry American Wheat available in cans, growlers and crowlers.
After staying quiet for some time, Blue Canoe Brewing Company has come back with its Double Rapids imperial IPA. At 8 percent ABV and 100 IBU, this one promises a ton of tropical fruit notes and plenty of citrus flavors to go along. That one is on tap right now. Also, Blue Canoe is holding a social media giveaway contest on its Facebook page. Just take a picture of yourself enjoying the summer this month with any Blue Canoe gear and post it to the brewery’s page. Once the month is over, Blue Canoe will select a winner and give them a special merchandise package.
And Core Brewing this coming weekend wants you to come along for a very special getaway. Core is holding a canoe float trip on the Buffalo River starting Friday and going until Sunday. That’s right, bring your tent and sleeping bag to Buffalo Camping and Canoeing, and Core will provide the beer, food, water and campsite. Tickets are $90 if you bring your own canoe and $150 with the rental, which is really not bad for a two-night event. Tickets for the float trip are on sale now.
