Growlers: Flyway Beer Dinner, Rebel Kettle C Street, Lost Forty Ice Day

Flyway Brewing has a busy week ahead with a couple of events and some old favorites back on tap. On Wednesday, it’s the Flyway for the Birds beer dinner with Audubon Arkansas, featuring five dishes with wild bird meat on the menu. Each of the five courses is paired with a Flyway brew, which should make for a satisfying evening. Tickets are $50 and are on sale now on the Facebook event page. Then on Friday, Flyway is debuting its new Christmas Ale. This one is brewed with molasses and spice in the style of a traditional holiday season cookie. Flyway is serving it with a cinnamon-sugar rim for an extra pop of spice and sweetness. And if you’re just stopping in, Flyway has returned both Peregrine Pale Ale and Flying Duck Amber Ale to the tapwall. Both of those are fan favorites, so make sure to stop in this week.
Rebel Kettle Brewing Company this week is continuing its experimental IPA project with Block 13 of the C Street series. Block 13 is a 7% ABV New England-style IPA brewed with Julius hops, which haven’t made it into many beers in Central Arkansas. Rebel Kettle says this hop variety helped contribute to a soft feel and a heavily citrus palate with aromas of mangoes, peaches and tangerines. The C Street series is responsible for some of my favorite IPAs made in Little Rock, but rarely do these beers ever make a second appearance. That’s why you need to be there for Rebel Kettle’s 4:30 Thursday event this week.
Lost Forty Brewing today is also releasing an IPA, though this is one you may remember from last year. Today’s Freshcut Monday release is Ice Day Arkansas Winter IPA, a 6% ABV brew that strikes a good balance between hops and malt on the sip. The malt is caramel, with a touch of sweetness and warmth that plays nicely with the citrus and resin notes from the hop profile. To celebrate today’s release, Lost Forty is bringing back the Fire and Ice challenge. Finish off six ultra-spicy wings and an Ice Day beer, and you could win a Lost Forty prize package including swag, a gift card and more. It all starts today at 4 p.m. If you can’t make it out, Ice Day will be getting statewide distribution, so look for some six-packs at your local liquor store soon.
You can always count on the guys at Stone’s Throw Brewing to find a little-known beer style and put their mark on it. That’s what they’ve done with this week’s #NewBrewFriday release. Alles Mögliche is a Dampfbier – a historic German style that was used by old breweries to clean out their pantries. Alles Mögliche is loosely translated as “everything but the kitchen sink,” and Stone’s Throw makes good on the name with four kinds of malt and two different hops in the recipe. The result is similar to a Hefeweizen but with a dryer finish due to the lack of wheat. This 5% ABV brew goes on tap at Stone’s Throw’s MacPark location this Friday at 4 p.m.
And Diamond Bear Brewing Company in North Little Rock this week has a double release party. On Saturday, the brewery is releasing its Backyard Bach and its Oatmeal Stout. Both beers seem like they’ll do well in the cold weather, with Backyard Bach’s 6% ABV traditional bock recipe and the 5.8% ABV Oatmeal Stout featuring a malt-forward profile and only light hops. The Backyard Bach party is Saturday from 2 until 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will get you a pour of each brew. They will also be available in cans around town later this month.
