Growlers: Flyway Celebrates First Birthday, Southern Snakecharmer by Rebel Kettle, Holiday Beers Around Town

Welcome to Growlers: your weekly roundup of news, events and specials from Little Rock’s breweries and taprooms. Little Rock’s beer scene is growing and improving at a rapid pace, and we’re dedicated to keeping you up to speed on all of it. Here’s what’s happening this week:
Flyway Brewing this week turns a year old and will celebrate in a big way this coming weekend. The taproom is holding a special customer appreciation event Saturday from noon until closing time with prize giveaways throughout the day. And because it is a brewery, you’ll get a chance to try a special Shadowhands Stout that’s been aging in a Four Roses barrel for most of this year. The barrel was a gift from 107 Liquor to celebrate Flyway’s grand opening. Also, keep your eyes on Flyway’s Facebook page for the latest news on Old Decoy, an old ale that should be finishing soon. Flyway’s Jess McMullen says they’re waiting for the oak-aged flavors to reach a perfect point before releasing it.
Speaking of birthdays, beer supply shop Fermentables in North Little Rock celebrates its 21st year in business on Wednesday. The store is discounting almost everything in the store by 21 percent to celebrate. It will also have plenty of giveaways, including Arkansas Brews Cruise door prizes and swag from area breweries. And you’ll be able to meet Bryce Nall and Scott Parton of Tap Time as they broadcast their beer talk radio show live from the shop that evening.
Longtime fans of Rebel Kettle Brewing Company will be glad to see an old beer festival favorite coming back this week. For 4:30 Thursday, Rebel Kettle will release its Southern Snakecharmer Mango-Habanero IPA. It’s a flavor-packed IPA that drinks surprisingly well. Head brewer John Lee tells me he’s excited about some more new releases they’re working on for the future, including the Clockwork Blood Orange Double Brown and a new persimmon sour ale.
Holiday-themed beers are arriving at Little Rock breweries, including at Vino’s Brewpub on Tuesday. Josiah Moody is putting on his Holidays spiced brown ale, brewed with cranberries, orange peel and loads of holiday spices. He also still has some of his Rock Island Steamer still on tap at Vino’s, though that is going fast.
And Blue Canoe Brewing Company still has a small amount of its Holiday Express left when it opens its doors on Wednesday. When I stopped by the taproom Saturday evening, there were fewer than 15 bottles left, so be sure to get there early Wednesday if you want to try this barrel-aged winter beer.
Tickets are still available for Tuesday’s beer dinner at The Southern Gourmasian, a long-running collaboration between the restaurant and Stone’s Throw Brewing. This month’s dinner features favorites of dinner guests from 2016. Also this week, Stone’s Throw is again releasing its Dark Helmet Schwarzbier brewed with Mylo Coffee. Dark Helmet will be in the taproom for #NewBrewFriday.
A winter favorite is back at Lost Forty starting today as Baltic Porter makes its return for Freshcut Mondays. It’s a super smooth porter with plenty of notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. And this weekend, Lost Forty teams up with PK Grills to celebrate the launch of the PK360 grill. There will also be a pop-up shop for PK Grills in the brewery for any late holiday shopping you still need to do.
