Growlers: Josiah Moody Returns, Rebel Kettle Sour Bottles, Lost Forty Pineapple Cream Ale

Josiah Moody, the celebrated Little Rock brewer who left to help run Bike Rack Brewing in Bentonville, is back in Central Arkansas. Moody was the head brewer at Vino’s until January 2017, but he is best known for his own Moody Brews brand, which produced some of the finest brews Little Rock has ever seen. Moody says there will be some Moody Brews-related news coming in the future, but for now he isn’t ready to talk about those plans. Right now, Moody is focusing on getting his family settled back in before he turns his attention to brewing. We will keep you posted on what shapes up for his future and the future of Moody Brews.
Rebel Kettle has its first bottling for sale at the taproom. Fuzzy Dice is a delicious peach-apricot sour ale that goes wonderfully well with the final days of summer. Rebel Kettle brewed about 900 large-format bottles of Fuzzy Dice, so the taproom will likely have some for sale at least for the rest of this week. Head brewer John Lee let me know the next bottled sour is already underway. “Berried Alive” will be a kettle-soured red ale fermented with 12 strains of Brettanomyces yeast then fermented again with blackberries and raspberries. Look for that one to come out in late fall. For this week, Rebel Kettle is bringing back Southern Snakecharmer for its 4:30 Thursday event. It’s a mango habanero IPA that many folks will remember from the days before Rebel Kettle opened its taproom. Expect a fruity IPA with some spicy heat on the finish.
Some changes appear to be in store at Flyway Brewing, starting at the top of the menu board. For the first time since opening day, Migrate Pale Ale is nowhere to be found on the menu. In it’s place right now is Honeybird Blond Ale, which started out as a seasonal brew but has quickly become popular. I spoke to owner Jess McMullen about the change, and he told me they haven’t yet finalized plans for the permanent menu. We will know more in the coming weeks. For now, Honeybird joins Peregrine Pale Ale and Low Flock IPA as three delicious seasonal brews currently on Flyway’s menu.
Today kicks off a new small batch at Lost Forty that has one eye on the beach. The taproom is releasing Teeny Tiny Umbrella today for its Freshcut Monday. Teeny Tiny Umbrella is created by blending Lost Forty’s excellent cream ale with real pineapple juice. At 5 percent ABV, this easy drinker is just begging for a few more weeks of warm weather to really show off its strengths. This small batch is getting the full Lost Forty treatment; in addition to buying it by the glass at the taproom, you can get it to go in crowlers, growlers and six-packs. Also this week, Painting with a Twist is back at Lost Forty on Wednesday. The $40 ticket to Easy Tiger Painting gets you some free beer as well as expert instruction in creating your own painted masterpiece.
The official beer of kickball is back this week at Stone’s Throw Brewing. Buxom Blonde, a classic blond ale created by homebrewers Ice 9, goes on tap for #NewBrewFriday at 4 p.m. Buxom Blonde beat out nearly two dozen beers at the Big Red Ball competition in January to win the 2018 crown. It was first released in March for the spring season of the Little Rock Kickball Association. This really is an excellent blonde ale that goes perfectly with kickball and other outdoor activities.
