Growlers: Moody Leaving Little Rock, Rebel Kettle Sour Release, Flyway's Euro-Delta Beer Brunch

Welcome to Growlers: your weekly roundup of news, events and specials from Little Rock’s breweries and taprooms. Little Rock’s beer scene is growing and improving at a rapid pace, and we’re dedicated to keeping you up to speed on all of it. Here’s what’s happening this week:
The news that Josiah Moody is departing Little Rock for Bentonville sent a ripple through the beer community this weekend. Still, Moody has some more brews to release before he leaves to head up Bike Rack Brewing Company. Today he has released the 2017 version of Katchiri’s Bier. This year’s iteration is a hoppy farmhouse saison brewed with wild yeast from Dunbar Community Garden. A portion of the ale was aged in a Rock Town Distillery gin barrel, then blended with a fresh batch and dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin hops. At 10 percent ABV, it’s certainly a powerful beer. That one is on tap now at Vino’s. Also, Moody will tap his barrel-aged Sixes and Sevens Friday night at Legacy Wine and Spirits in West Little Rock. Moody’s Belgian-style chocolate porter was aged in a Crown Royal whiskey barrel and conditioned on cacao nibs. That one will only be available at Legacy in to-go growlers.
The weather is certainly appropriate for barrel-aged beers, but that’s not stopping Rebel Kettle from re-releasing a bright sour this week. It’s 4:30 Thursday tapping is Richard Persimmon’s sour ale. This is a farmhouse-style ale that was refermented with 180 pounds of Arkansas persimmons for a sweet, tart finish. It was released to positive reviews last spring, and I’m excited to see it back on tap this week. Also, don’t forget Rebel Kettle offers some nice discounts on Sundays, including $1 off all 10-, 12- and 16-ounce pours, and $2 off all growlers refills.
Little Rock’s beer brunch game is pretty strong, and it gets even better this coming weekend at Flyway Brewing. Rising star chef Amanda Ivy is coming to Flyway 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday for the Euro-Delta Beer Brunch. Ivy has promised a fusion of European and Mississippi Delta cuisine, including a Cornbread Benedict with Bacon Fat Hollandaise (which sounds ridiculous). Also, Flyway has started brewing its Lord God Imperial Chocolate Stout for a release sometime next month.
Don’t forget to go to The Water Buffalo Friday after work for the commercial beer debut of Blood Eagle Brewing Company. The Blood Eagle team has brewed a session IPA called Sitra Cadabra that will be available starting at 4 p.m. Also, Nolen Buffalo tells me he’s about to start stocking beekeeping supplies at The Water Buffalo for the first time, and will soon announce introductory classes for people interested in starting their own hives.
Rock Candy is back at Lost Forty today. The brewery is re-releasing Rock Candy Belgian Abbey Dubbel Ale for its Freshcut Mondays event at 4 p.m. This last went on tap last spring and was a solid brew that paired well with the taproom’s bread and butter (and pickles) plate. This time around, Rock Candy will be available in four-packs to go, as well as growlers and crowlers. Also, there are still a few tickets left to the Lost Forty/South on Main beer dinner tomorrow night. This has been my favorite beer-pairing dinner over the past few years, so if you’re free tomorrow, you really should check it out.
Speaking of great beer pairings, Stone’s Throw is holding its monthly beer dinner at The Southern Gourmasian on Thursday evening. Tickets are $50 for one person or $90 for two. Also, make sure to check out Stone’s Throw’s #NewBrewFriday release of its Trappist Single ale. Trappist Single is a Patersbier, which is a style we don’t see very often here. And at 5 percent ABV, you’ll be able to enjoy more than one pour at the taproom.
A reminder that Blue Canoe Brewing Company’s Gilligan’s Brew is still on tap at its 3rd Street taproom this week. This coconut stout is pretty smooth for a 10-percent ABV ale. Growlers and crowlers are available.
