There is something happening nearly every day this week at Flyway Brewing, so let’s dig right into it:
- Tuesday: Flyway is releasing a brand new brew for its first spring seasonal called Peregrine Pale Ale. Brewed with Citra hops, Peregrine is a more hoppy pale ale than Migrate. At 5.4 percent ABV, it’s light enough to enjoy without much guilt.
- Thursday: It’s another new Flyway brew hitting the taps. This one is called Her Hibiscus Belgian Ale, a monster 9.6 percent ABV Belgian tripel aged on hibiscus flowers. This brew was created to benefit the Pink Boots Society, a nonprofit for women in the brewing industry.
- Saturday: Flyway Brewing is holding a tap takeover at Whole Foods on Bowman Road from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
- Sunday: Flyway is hosting a pop-up brunch with Delta Biscuit Company from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Expect several biscuit dishes, including fried biscuit dough, biscuits and gravy, and a fried chicken biscuit.
Also, Flyway has updated its food menu. Some items have been deleted, and Flyway has added four varieties of smothered fries to its regular lineup. I got a chance to try a few items Friday evening and really enjoyed what I tasted. Stop by some time this week and give it a shot.
The “Official Beer of Kickball” arrives at Stone’s Throw Brewing this week on #NewBrewFriday. Buxom Blonde, a classic blond ale created by homebrewers Ice 9, goes on tap at 4 p.m. Friday. Buxom Blonde, originally called X 2 Blonde, beat out nearly two dozen beers at the Big Red Ball competition in January. I was there and can confirm this is a really good brew; it should be perfect for kickball season. Also on Friday, Stone’s Throw will hold its annual release of Mickey’s Irish Red, a 6 percent ABV classic Irish red with caramel malt flavors.
Get ready for one of the biggest block parties of 2018. On April 7, Rebel Kettle will hold its second anniversary celebration on Collins Street in front of the brewery. Beer and Loathing in Little Rock will feature live music, food trucks, a barrel-aged booth and plenty of Rebel Kettle brews. Keep watching Rebel Kettle’s page for more details about the event. By the way, this week’s 4:30 Thursday is Season of Sin, a spring seasonal farmhouse-style saison with notes of citrus fruit and peppery spice.
After a terrific February full of barrel-aged releases, Lost Forty Brewing has another entry in its Wild Barrels Project for Freshcut Monday today. TWIG is a mildly sour farmhouse saison that comes in at a light 4.3 percent ABV. Lost Forty made TWIG in its foeder, a large wooden barrel used for fermentation. This is a very small batch; for now, it will only be available by the glass in the taproom. However, Lost Forty plans to make it available by bottles to-go in the near future.
At long last, Slate Rock Brewing in Clark County is nearing its opening day. Shawn and Orianne Burgess posted on Facebook that the taproom is targeting April to open its doors. The exact date isn’t set yet, but after nearly three years, it’s exciting to be so close. Slate Rock will have four beers on tap to start, including a smoked stout. Slate Rock will run a 6 bbl system, so it will be making enough for the taproom and some crowlers and growlers to take home. We’ll let you know as soon as the opening date is announced.
Lunch is back at Blue Canoe Brewing Company’s downtown taproom. Starting tomorrow, Blue Canoe will open at 11 a.m. and serve from its regular menu. Also this week, Blue Canoe is releasing a double dry-hopped Starfruit IPA made with Mosaic and Citra hops. It’s a 6 percent ABV ale that’s more of a juicy brew than a hoppy one. This one is out for Blue Canoe’s New Brew Thursday event.
