Two of my favorite breweries will have beer in the same place this Wednesday, when Flyway Brewing holds a special keg tapping from Prestonrose Farm & Brewing Company. The beer is Blue Centennial American Blue Ale, and it’s a pretty unique style. Prestonrose brewer Liz Preston uses malts from Troubadour Malting in Colorado, which are cured using specialized techniques for deep flavors and a distinctive color. Preston describes it as darker than a pale, but still not as dark as a brown ale. Flyway is the only place you’ll be able to find it, so make sure to stop by (anytime you can get a glass of Prestonrose in Little Rock, it’s worth the trip). Don’t forget, Flyway still has its Kingfisher IPA on tap as well as newly canned Free Range Brown Ale to take home.
Rebel Kettle is the place to be for sour fans this week. For its 4:30 Thursday event, the brewery is again releasing its Richard Persimmons sour saison. This one is a low-alcohol brew aged on more than 100 pounds of locally grown persimmons. It is a very small batch, so don’t expect it to last into the weekend. Also, Rebel Kettle still has a few four-packs available of its excellent Purple Dinosour boysenberry sour ale, but brewer John Lee tells me this one is going quickly. It is very tough to find a sour of this quality available to take home, so make sure to stop by before it’s sold out.
Fans of Lost Forty’s regularly recurring Trash Panda IPA should stop by the brewery today. The brew team is putting out Little Panda Hazy Pale Ale at 4 p.m. this afternoon. Little Panda is lighter in both hops and alcohol content than Trash Panda, but Lost Forty says there is still plenty of bite to it. The unfiltered ale will be available by the pint at the taproom, as well as in growlers and crowlers to take home. By the way, Lost Forty still has some Love Honey Doppelbock left, and you need to go get some ASAP. It is already an early contender for my best beer of 2018; it’s that good.
Assuming it doesn’t S-N-O-W out, tomorrow evening is a promising beer dinner collaboration with Stone’s Throw Brewing and The Pantry. At last check, there were only a few tickets left; those wanting to attend should call 501-353-1875. Tickets are $60 each and not only include your beer and food, but also a chance to win swag like t-shirts, gift certificates and more. Stone’s Throw also has two new releases on #NewBrewFriday at the taproom. The team will tap its Brownstone Brown Ale, which it has off and on pretty regularly, and Kentucky Common, an ale that hasn’t been on tap in about a year. Kentucky Common uses a lot more corn than a typical brew, resulting in a sweet aroma and a texture similar to a cream ale. Both brews go on tap at Stone’s Throw at 4 p.m. Friday.
Blue Canoe Brewing Company is really putting its new warehouse space to good use. The brewery has been holding regular events at its 15th Street location, and on Friday Blue Canoe welcomes Arkansas-based Couch Jackets for a special concert. Couch Jackets are a psych-funk band (their sound reminds me of Animal Collective, if that helps you any) that has been recording in Nashville. They are back, though, for this concert, which will cost you $10 to get in. All ages welcome, though you must be 21 to buy beer, obviously. Also this weekend, make sure to check out Blue Canoe’s new Weizenbock brew. Brewer Patrick Cowan says this one is a 7 percent ABV bock with subtle notes of banana, spice and vanilla. He’s working on having it ready for the concert, but make sure to check Facebook to see when it’s out.
