Growlers: Rebel Kettle C Street Block 10, Lost Forty S'morest Queen

Some of my favorite beers in Central Arkansas are series beers. Flyway has its creative cake series brews, Lost Forty has its tremendous Wild Barrels Project sour series, and Rebel Kettle this week adds to its C Street series of IPAs. Except C Street Block 10 isn’t an IPA at all. Brewers John Lee and Josh Davis have created what they’re calling an NEDIPL – that’s New England double India pale lager. They took a typical New England double recipe and added oats, barley and wheat, then pitched everything on German lager yeast. Mosaic, El Dorado and Amarillo hops give this one its flavor profile of pear, apricot and pineapple. Lee says, despite the fact it’s a lager, that Block 10 is the closest they’ve come to a true New England-style IPA. You can get your hands on this one during Rebel Kettle’s 4:30 Thursday event.
One of Lost Forty Brewing’s most popular seasonal offerings is its Forest Queen Milk Stout. Today for its Freshcut Monday release, Lost Forty is riffing on the classic with its “S’morest” Queen Stout. This one is exactly what it sounds like; Lost Forty takes Forest Queen and conditions it on chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. The brew team says this one came out with noticeable flavors of honey, vanilla and chocolate. I really wish there was more of this one to go around, but it’s only available by the glass in the taproom. S’morest Queen is on tap today astarting at 4 p.m.
We’re getting into big beer season, with cooler weather encouraging breweries to trot out their higher ABV creations. Stone’s Throw this week is bringing back one of its better ones in its Magnum Trip Belgian Tripel. Magnum Trip is a big 10 percent ABV brew that trends to the sweet side with plenty of yeast and fruit flavors. Magnum Trip hides its high alcohol content well, so be careful not to let it sneak up on you. Magnum Trip makes its way to the tap this week at Stone’s Throw’s #NewBrewFriday event.
We missed this one last week, but Flyway Brewing has debuted its new Flying Duck Amber Ale. This 4.9 percent ABV ale was created in collaboration with Rich-N-Tone Calls, a company that creates high quality duck calls. Flying Duck is a malty brew with a balanced, light hop profile. It’s on tap right now and available in growlers to go. You can also find six-packs remaining of Flyway’s Early Bird and Honeybird at the taproom if you stop by this week.
