One of the best annual sour releases is back this week at Rebel Kettle Brewing Company. The brewery’s 4:30 Thursday tapping is Plum Dawg Millionaire, a plum and cherry barrel-aged dark sour. John Lee and Josh Davis aged this one for six months in fresh Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels, then refermented everything with more than 200 pounds of plum and cherry puree. Expect a ton of flavor in this one, with notes ranging from chocolate and vanilla to stone fruit, oak and apple. This one is rightfully a fan favorite, so expect a pretty good crowd at the release event on Thursday.
Stone’s Throw Brewing is also returning a crowd-pleaser to the taproom wall for its #NewBrewFriday event. Cocoa Celebration Chocolate Stout is back for 2019 this Friday starting at 4 p.m. This 6 percent ABV milk stout has the classic sweetness and smoothness of the style, and the addition of Izard Chocolate cacao nibs this time around should add a touch of depth and bitterness. In addition on Friday, Stone’s Throw is launching its new seasonal cider called Plum Crazy Pear. It will replace the current Cranapple cider. Finally, Stone’s Throw is hosting a “Meet the Brewer” happy hour Friday so you can hang out with Ian and Theron and the gang while enjoying these brews.
While dark beer releases usually dominate the winter months, Lost Forty Brewing is going in the opposite direction. For today’s Freshcut Monday release, the brewery is releasing Second Rodeo Arkansas Light Beer. This pilot release is a 4.3 percent ABV brew that uses Arkansas rice for a crisp, light taste. Today’s release is a limited one; you can only get it by the glass from the taproom. However, Lost Forty is planning a wide can release this summer, when Second Rodeo will fit right in with the season. Freshcut Monday kicks off today at 4 p.m.
We’ve talked about Sierra Nevada’s Resilience IPA a few times in this space. Check out our story on Buffalo Brewing Company’s release of the special beer here. Since then, Lost Forty brewed and put it on tap last week, and both Diamond Bear Brewing Company and Slate Rock Brewing in Amity have both released it at their respective locations. It bears repeating: this is one of the most important beers that has ever been made, both in terms of its impact and how it represents the craft beer community. Make sure to try it soon. All proceeds from Resilience IPA go to benefit the victims of the Camp fire in California.
No new releases or events at Flyway this week, though the brewery did ask me to pass along that every Thursday at 7 p.m. is Live Trivia night. If you haven’t done this before, it’s worth checking out. Each table in the taproom is a team, and you work together to answer various trivia questions over several rounds. The winners get some legit prizes, including swag and beer from Flyway Brewing. I’ve taken my family to Flyway for Trivia night several times, and we’ve always had fun with it.
