Growlers: Rebel Kettle Sportzbier, Lost Forty Squirrel Sailor, Stone's Throw Hoppy Wheat

Every now and then, a truly crazy beer hits the market, and it’s usually the guys at Rebel Kettle putting it out there. Take this week’s 4:30 Thursday release, simply called Sportzbier. Everything I’m about to tell you about this beer, by the way, is completely true. Sportzbier is a 5% ABV tart wheat beer packed with electrolytes. It pours a vibrant red color with a light pink head, and features a nose that will remind you of Little League. The flavor profile is described as “fruit-punchy” with a clean finish. Sportzbier sounds a little crazy, but if there’s one brewery that can pull it off, it’s Rebel Kettle. This is a small batch, and the unique nature of the beer means it could get a curious crowd to check it out. Make sure you get there at 4:30 this Thursday to give it a shot.
Lost Forty Brewing starts off this week in the beer scene with the wide release of its new IPA. Squirrel Sailor is this week’s Freshcut Monday release. This one is a 6.3% ABV IPA brewed with four different hop varieties for a juicy profile full of tropical and citrus notes. It made its debut a few months ago as a small-batch pilot, and the response was positive enough to warrant a seasonal release. Squirrel Sailor goes on tap at Lost Forty today at 4 p.m. It will also be available in four-packs to go at the taproom; you will be able to find it statewide later this week and throughout the summer.
Stone’s Throw Brewing is tapping its regularly revised wheat beer for its #NewBrewFriday at the MacPark location. Decimal Hoppy Wheat goes on tap Friday at 4 p.m. Decimal Hoppy Wheat gets a new hop bill every time Theron Cash and the brew team make it. This version contains Columbus, Cascade, Azacca, Simcoe, Mosaic and Eureka hops. Expect a tropical wheat nose and loads of flavor with a hoppy-dry finish from this one. At 5% ABV, you can probably afford to have seconds of this crisp ale. It should make its way to the Stifft Station location in the coming weeks.
We don’t have an official release date yet, but Flyway Brewing should soon be releasing a variation on its excellent Free Range brown ale. This one is a coffee coconut brown ale that comes in at 5.9% ABV. We don’t know much else about it; however, you remember that Flyway has experimented with several variations of coffee in Free Range before, and this looks to be a continuation of that series. Be sure to check Flyway’s Facebook page to see when this one gets its official release.
