Growlers: Stone's Throw S'Mores and Pours, Rebel Kettle Alphaholic is Back, Lost Forty's Wandering White Hop

Stone’s Throw Brewing is going full steam into the holiday season with a triple release on Friday paired with a cold-weather tradition. The brewery is holding a campfire event it’s calling “S’Mores and Pours,” an outdoor marshmallow roast with Izard Chocolate bark and Loblolly marshmallows made with Stone’s Throw’s Shamus Stout. You can pair those with either (or both) of the brewery’s winter releases: Dos Cabras Doppelbock and Ripple Effect Rye. Dos Cabras is an 8-percent ABV brew with big malty notes (the brewery invites you to think “liquid bread”). Ripple Effect Rye has been off and on at Stone’s Throw since it opened, and fans of rye will want to put it on their wish list. Also Friday, Stone’s Throw is debuting Cashmere SMASH, a smash beer (made with only one malt and one hop) made with cashmere hops that give their ales citrus and melon notes. This all starts with the beer releases at 4 p.m. on Friday; the S’Mores and Pours event kicks off at 5 p.m.
One of the city’s more popular IPAs goes back on tap at Rebel Kettle this week for 4:30 Thursday. Alphaholic is a big 8-percent ABV imperial IPA that was on when Rebel Ketle opened, and now this unfiltered juicer is back with a slightly new recipe. Rebel Kettle is using Lupalin powder instead of Simcoe hops, which brewery John Lee says makes the ale more expressive. Also for 4:30 Thursday is the debut of Plum Dawg Millionaire, a new barrel-aged dark sour ale that was refermented on plums and cherries. At 7 percent ABV, this one should be a perfect sour as we transition from fall into winter.
Seems like this is the week for old favorites to return, including today’s Freshcut Monday at Lost Forty. The brewery is bringing back its Wandering White Hop Belgian Ale. This is a 6.3 percent ABV wheat ale that is very easy to drink despite its hopped profile. The white hops bring a grapefruit-like finish and some mild spice to a refreshing brew. This one is getting the full Lost Forty treatment: it’s available by the pint and in cans, growlers and crowlers. Freshcut Monday kicks off at 4 p.m. today.
Blue Canoe Brewing Company ended up pushing back the release of its Flat Bottom IPA to this Friday instead of last. It’s a 5.5 percent ABV sessionable IPA; at 40 IBU, it shouldn’t be nearly as bitter as many IPAs on the market. Blue Canoe still has plenty of its Cran Gose from the Thanksgiving weekend as well, both at the taproom and the warehouse on 15th St. Also, Blue Canoe is getting into the yoga action with Yoga on Draft at the warehouse location. This will be Tuesdays over the next month starting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Be sure to check out the event page for class information. $10 cash or $11 credit gets you in the door and your first beer.
