Growlers: Summer Jam at Rebel Kettle, Lost Forty Big Beer Deals, Stone's Throw Anniversary

Independence Day is this week, and there is plenty of good beer to go around. Case in point: Rebel Kettle’s excellent raspberry sour Summer Jam returns this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. At only 4.5 percent, this sour ale is made for seconds (or thirds) and has a wonderful combination of sweet, dry and tart flavors. This one has been a perennial Rock City Eats favorite since its debut in 2016. To mark the occasion, Rebel Kettle has invited the Rolling Blackouts to their outdoor stage for a concert from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. There’s no cover, so there’s no excuse to miss this fantastic beer and what should be a fun evening on the patio.
Get to Lost Forty this week for a bunch of great deals on craft beer. The one most people will take advantage of is buying four 6-packs for the price of three, which is a great way to load up for a day out on the lake. You can also do what I did and get three bottles of either TWIG or Wild Cider for the price of two (side note: TWIG is a tremendous beer). Or you could take your growler to the taproom and fill it up with Cream Ale for just $7. There are some other offers involving merchandise that you can check out on the Lost Forty Brewing Facebook page. The beer deals last all this week, so you can still take advantage after the holiday.
Another annual tradition finds its way on tap this week. This one is at Stone’s Throw, where Ian, Theron and the team are releasing their Anniversary Stout. It was July 4th five years ago that the Stone’s Throw team brewed their first beer on their new equipment, and what was supposed to be Shamus Stout turned into something much darker and more boozy. Each year on Independence Day, Stone’s Throw puts a limited batch of this imperial stout on nitro in the taproom. This Wednesday, the taproom will also have a single keg of 2017 Anniversary Stout that’s been cellaring for a year, which should be a fun side-by-side comparison. Stone’s Throw is also putting out a new triple IPA for #NewBrewFriday, so you have at least two good reasons this week to get to the taproom at 9th and Rock.
It used to be that Flyway Brewing would only put out a new beer every month or two, but since this spring the brewery has really been flexing its creative muscles. This Friday, Flyway is tapping another new one called Honeybird Blonde Ale. It’s an easy-drinking blonde with a touch of honey sweetness and a crisp finish. You can try it when Flyway opens for lunch at 11 a.m. By the way, Sunday brunch is now here to stay at Flyway. The taproom opens at 10 a.m. and serves a unique menu every weekend.
If you’re looking for some traditional Americana this holiday, Blue Canoe Brewing Company has you covered. On the 4th, you can get a free hot dog with every pint you purchase. No, it’s not a gourmet or overwrought frankfurter; Blue Canoe is handing out the dogs from your childhood with ketchup and/or mustard. This deal is only at the taproom downtown.
