Start your weekend with sculpture. This Friday, April 22, don’t miss the 9th annual Sculpture at the River Market event. There is a ticketed Preview Party Friday at 6:30 p.m., in which you can view hundreds of sculptures from internationally recognized artists in the River Market Pavilions. The event features food, libations, live entertainment and more.
There will also be a vote for the 2016 Public Art Commission, and the winner will be placed on the grounds of Central High School.
If you can’t make Friday, don’t fret. On Saturday, there will be a 2 p.m. Docent Tour of the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden, which is free and open to the public. There will also be a tour at the same time on the following Sunday, as well as food trucks available.

Your weekend fun doesn’t stop there. Make your way to the Heights for a fun celebration of locally crafted items and businesses. Handmade in the Heights will be going on Saturday, April 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Kavanaugh Boulevard. The event aims to celebrate crafters and creators of all kinds, and with over 120 vendors, there’s something for everyone. Bring the whole family as there will be a bounce house for kids, and the eateries in the neighborhood will be pulling out all the stops.
Next Thursday, April 28, Shoog Radio presents The Whole Famn Damily. Plan to be at the Joint Theatre and Coffeehouse in Argenta to catch the live recording of the band. Get more deets here.
Mark Friday May 6, as a date to head to Argenta for the Thea Foundation’s The Art Department 12th installment. Featured artist Michael Church will be at the unveiling of his exhibit – “Succinct.”
There will be a reception that evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. to meet with the artist and view his work. Tickets are required, but there will be heavy hors d’oeuvres with an open beer and wine bar, and a live musical performance by A Rowdy Faith, which you won’t want to miss.
Church’s thought-provoking collages have been featured nationally in publications including Satellite Magazine and Kolaj Magazine, and his most recent show, titled “A Murder of Crows: A Southern Retrospective,” was a joint exhibition with renowned artist V.L. Cox.
Speaking of V.L. Cox, did you hear her recent announcement? Twenty-two pieces of the End Hate Collection from her “A Murder of Crows” exhibit have been acquired by a private collector. This includes the End Hate Doors which were displayed on the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The collection will now stay together as a whole and will be a traveling exhibition launching this summer with Cox officially managing the series.

On Saturday May 7, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre will host ArtWorks, an evening of live and silent auctions. The silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m. and features work by more than 90 of Central Arkansas’ most notable artists. This past week, the Arkansas Art Center released the list of artists to be featured in the 58th annual Delta Exhibition. The exhibit will run from June 10 – Aug. 28 this year.
The exhibition was founded in 1958 to feature contemporary work by artists born in or currently living in Arkansas and bordering states. Today, the 58th Annual Delta Exhibition has grown to encompass works in all media and is a showcase for the dynamic vision of the artists of the Mississippi Delta region.
Elizabeth K. Garvey is the juror for the 58th Annual Delta Exhibition. Garvey is the co-founder and owner of Garvey-Simon Art Access, Inc. She has been a fine art dealer and advisor in New York City for over 20 years. Garvey maintains a boutique gallery in Manhattan that is focused on drawing, works on paper, unusual materials and design; while also acting as curator and advisor to select private clients.
Garvey selected 52 artworks by 30 artists, representing nine states. They were chosen out of 1,038 entries by 457 artists.
