Rock City Review: Checking in on Three Fold, Breakfasting at @ The Corner, Cooling Off at Mylo

My recent ventures into Rock City’s food scene…
For a moment there I thought I would have to check myself into a facility for my Three Fold Noodle addiction. I have been a fan of their noodle bowls and steamed dumplings from day one, so when I went in the other day for lunch after weaning myself off the eatery, I was ecstatic. I ordered the Vegetarian Noodle Bowl (I think Three Fold is one of the few places in town that does tofu right), and went at it. I was pleased with the spicy sauce option for the noodle bowl, the first few times I opted for spicy my dish yielded rather mild results. This time around it was just right. Also, I stumbled upon the restaurant’s new-ish addition of Sesame Balls to the menu. A traditional Chinese pastry made from sweet rice flour coated in sesame seeds and filled with red bean paste, the balled-dessert makes for a sweet bite an the end of a meal. I’ll have to be honest, I totally dug the little guy. My only problem was that it wasn’t as warm as I would have liked, so next time, I’ll make sure to ask for a piping hot version.
I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian, but lately I’ve been eating less meat. On a recent trip to The Root, I happened upon their special – Vegan Pancakes – and wanted to give them a try as I am a huge fan of The Root’s regular pancakes. I don’t know what I was expecting, but on the first bite my taste-buds were impressed. With a slight cinnamon taste, the pancakes were fluffy, filling and wonderful. They aren’t quite on par with the original, but they aren’t far from the mark. One word of caution – if they’re on the menu, they won’t last long. Word is out about these among the vegan/vegetarian community so if you’re curious to try them, you better get in quick.
I’ve tried @ The Corner for lunch a time or two, so it’s high time I stepped in for breakfast. The diner has added table service since opening, which I think works well in the space. The breakfast menu is fun with options from a traditional two egg breakfast to pancakes and everything in-between. I opted for the egg-white Power Bowl, which tasted incredibly fresh. The scramble was complete with turkey, spinach, feta, onion, and deliciously juicy sun-dried tomatoes. I also ordered a side of hash browns – so much for watching my figure – and well … Those things were the bomb. They were crispy, yet still soft in all the right places, topped off with sea salt. Best thing? They were made fresh that morning. I could probably eat two to ten plates of those hash browns … and you might need to as the serving size is a little on the smallish side.
Summer in the south makes me think of lemonade stands and how I am not a fan of lemonade. In fact, I have horrid memories of attempting to make Lemonade as a child, failing, and then drinking that overly sweet junk that leaves your teeth chalky. When I was in Mylo Coffee Co. the other day I happened upon their house-made Fresh Mint Lemonade. Curiosity got the better of me, and I gave it a whirl. I loved the taste, because although it was sweet, it was tempered by the mint and it had a slight tart feel to it. Not the sour kind, but the pleasant kind when combined with fresh mint. If you haven’t, give it a try on a warm afternoon. They whip it up for you fresh right after you order.
