Eating breakfast as the train passes by may seem like the beginning of a good country song, but it is an experience worth checking out in Fordyce at the Round Table Coffee Shop.
Round Table was built out of an old train depot and sits inches away from the train tracks in the historic train yard area, just off downtown Fordyce. The property comes complete with an old Locomotive engine on the grounds that operated in Fordyce from 1931 to 1948 that was returned to Fordyce in 2007. The tracks behind the restaurant are still operational, and occasionally you will have a train come by, shaking the restaurant in the process. It is certainly one of the most unique experiences in Arkansas dining.
Inside you will find the place decorated with a hodgepodge of various items, stuffed animals, and references to the historical railroad area that it sits. It is certainly a locals hangout, but we found them more than friendly to out of town people.
The restaurant itself is exactly what you would expect from a good southern Arkansas cafe. Plenty of southern staples like chicken fried steak, pork chops, chicken, and all the fried veggies you could ask for. We stopped in for breakfast which was full of the standard breakfast meats, eggs, and a variety of breakfast sandwiches.
A couple of things that really stood out were, what is quite possibly the best biscuits we have found around the state. They are gigantic buttermilk biscuits, towering over the rest of the food. Despite the size, they were very flakey and moist throughout with plenty of butter added along the way.
We also had a breakfast wrap, which is eggs, breakfast meat of your choice (we went with sausage), and hash browns wrapped in a tortilla and seared off on the griddle. It is the perfect alternative to a breakfast sandwich, and the added hash browns put it over the top. They also feature this in a burger version for lunch that sounds equally as promising.
Round Table has daily specials running all the time, be sure to check those out while in. They also have a pie case full of various homemade pies available by the slice or whole pie.
Overall it is the perfect stop off for a trip to south Arkansas and a more than a reasonably priced meal for the quality.
