Rumbles: Beast Food Truck Closes, Trio's Capi Peck Wins Election, K Hall Enters Black Hall of Fame

News
With the conclusion of our Rock City Eats Trucksgiving food truck event this past weekend, we say goodbye to Beast Food Truck, which is parking for good. Chef and owner Gwen Jones started Beast a couple of years ago, and her paleo concept proved popular, particularly her outstanding truck-made bacon and paleo tacos. Jones has worked at several area restaurants recently, including helping Rebel Kettle open and pitching in at The Southern Gourmasian. Jones is currently working at Rebel Kettle, where you can find some of her fantastic meats on the menu.
Congratulations to Trio’s Restaurant chef and owner Capi Peck, who defeated Jeff Yates for the Ward 4 seat on the Little Rock City Board of Directors. Peck has long served in the public sector, including her current position of chair for the Little Rock Advertising and Promotion Commission. If you’ve spent any time with Peck, you know her passion for Little Rock and her love for the people who live here. Peck takes over the seat vacated by Brad Cazort, who held the position for the past 20 years.
We missed this last week, but congratulations are in order to K Hall and Sons, the grocery store and burger shop on Wright Ave. The Hall family was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame last week. Estella and Knoxie Hall were recognized for their work at K Hall, which has been operating since 1973 (it was then named “Hall’s Produce”). K Hall and Sons operates seven days a week and is a reliable source of Southern foodstuffs, including turkey necks, hog jowls and crawfish tails. More than a dozen members of the Hall family have a hand in day-to-day operations at K Hall and Sons.
Along the same vein, today is the final day for nominations for the inaugural Arkansas Food Hall of Fame. The new program, run by the Department of Arkansas Heritage, looks to recognize some of the great restaurants and food businesses around the state. Nominees for the hall of fame must have been in business for at least 25 years. Only three inductees will be honored every year. Other categories include proprietor of the year, food event of the year and a people’s choice category.
If the outstanding pies and breakfast items weren’t enough reason to go to Honey Pies, the coffee now comes with a bonus. For every cup of coffee Honey Pies sells, the business will donate a meal to the Arkansas Foodbank to help people in need. Honey Pies serves Sherwood-based Leiva Coffee, which itself works to help farmers and families in Guatemala. By the way, if you want Honey Pies on the table for Thanksgiving, you had better get your order in quickly. There are only a few more availabilities left before the cutoff mark.
One of the more popular destinations for Arkansans traveling to Memphis is Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous, which sells an astounding amount of ribs every year. And this Thanksgiving, those ribs could be delivered right to your house. Rendezvous has partnered with Chef Shuttle to deliver a limited number of its rib boxes to the Little Rock area. Place your order between now and November 19 to get two full slabs of ribs and a few extras for $75. You can also order additional slabs of ribs for $25 each. Orders for this one won’t last very long, so if you’re interested, make sure to get to Chef Shuttle’s website and make your purchase soon.
I don’t know why I have to keep saying this, but those of you who still haven’t given Rock Town Distillery a second chance since its opening are missing some of the best whiskey not just in the country, but on the planet. Don’t believe me? We took a look this week at how one of the world’s most reliable whiskey critics is again heaping major praise on Little Rock’s outstanding distillery.
Conway folks have quite a gem on their hands in Blue Sail Coffee. We took a look at the UCA location of the popular coffee shop to examine the appealing drink and food menus.
