Growlers: Block on Rock is Saturday, Diamond Bear Pale Ale in Cans, Lost Forty's The Hunter Arrives

The best regularly occurring beer party in town is this Saturday, when Stone’s Throw Brewing celebrates its fourth birthday with the Block on Rock block party. If you’ve ever been to one, you know that Stone’s Throw isn’t one to keep the party to itself. Food trucks, other local breweries, Rock Town Distillery and live music are all going to be there for what promises to be another huge celebration. Admission to the party is $5, though you can pick up discounted armbands at the taproom this week for $3. The party kicks off at 4 p.m. and is scheduled to go until 10 p.m. Stone’s Throw is donating a portion of all food, beer and admission proceeds to Preserve Arkansas, a nonprofit committed to preserving the state’s architectural and cultural history. By the way, stop in on Friday to get your armband and try the brand new Really Awful Terrible Lager for #NewBrewFriday. The brew gets its name from the Really Awful Terrible Night of Comedy, an event that same evening at the Metroplex to raise money for The September Fund.
Diamond Bear Brewing Company is joining in on the canning trend with the release of its well-loved pale ale. The new green can is available in the taproom now and soon will be available for purchase all around the city. Diamond Bear has already been canning its Southern Blonde and Strawberry Blonde this summer, but this release marks the first time its flagship ale has made it into cans. Pick up a six-pack this Friday at 5 p.m. and you’ll be able to try head brewer Nathan Greubel’s unique twist on the classic ale. For the brewery’s Cubby Series, Greubel has made a five-gallon batch of pale ale fermented on tamarind. I got a chance to try this one a couple of weeks ago; the tamarind gives the ale a juicy tartness that adds fun dimension to the flavor profile. Get there on time, because this small batch won’t last for very long.
It’s still July, but that’s not too early for Lost Forty to release its Marzen-style Oktoberfest brew The Hunter. This is the third year for The Hunter, but by far the earliest the brewery has released its trademark orange can. The 6.1 percent ABV ale is out today at 4 p.m. for the brewery’s Freshcut Monday release. It’s available pretty much any way you want it from the taproom: pints, crowlers, growlers, 6-packs, 12-packs and cases. It’s only available today at Lost 40; expect to see it around town sometime in August.
Beer Yoga is now a regular event at Rebel Kettle Brewing Company. The yoga session has gotten so popular, you can now find it every Tuesday at 7 p.m. The class is $10 and covers the cost of your first beer. Bring your own towel and mat. If you want your beer without the yoga, stop by for 4:30 Thursday for the release of Blonde Ambition. This is a dry-hopped blonde ale that should bring a little extra flavor to a classic easy sipper; Rebel Kettle calls it “the blonde ale that’s striving to be an IPA.”
And we first reported this in Rumbles last week, but Blue Canoe Brewing Company has the go-ahead from the city to build a new brewing facility. The new building will be at 1637 E. 15th Street and includes plans for a large metal brewing facility, bar area and a patio, indicating Blue Canoe won’t just be using it for making beer. Blue Canoe is keeping the details close to the vest for now, but we’ll be sure to update you on the progress of the new space as well as Blue Canoe’s plans for its existing taproom.
