Rumbles: James at the Mill Closes, South on Main Welcomes California Chefs, Table 28 and Rock Town Team Up

In a surprising turn, acclaimed restaurant James at the Mill in Johnson, Ark., has closed. The restaurant, run by chef Miles James at the Inn at the Mill, had a successful 20-year run that came to an end last week. Chef James used the restaurant to introduce his refined Southern dining ideas, which proved popular among diners and critics alike. At this time, we don’t yet know what led to the restaurant’s closure. Chef James is the owner of MJ Pizzeria in Springdale and is already planning a second location in Fayetteville.
There’s a special evening planned Sunday night at South on Main. That’s when the restaurant will welcome Crystal Delongpre and Courtney Rae from California-based Bacon and Brine for a special dinner event. The evening will start with a viewing of “Hungry,” a documentary by Logo TV on the lives of women in the restaurant industry. Both Bacon and Brine owners are featured in the documentary and will be taking questions afterward. Of course, there will be food prepared by the Bacon and Brine duo and chef Matthew Bell in a special farm-to-table menu. Tickets to the event are $100, which covers the meal, viewing and one drink coupon.
Speaking of special dinners, mark Aug. 30 on your calendar right now. That’s when Table 28 and Rock Town Distillery are partnering for a five-course whiskey dinner. As someone who has been to two coursed dinners from chef Scott Rains, I can tell you they are not to be missed. Right now, we don’t have a menu, but the restaurant is taking $90 per-person reservations right now. You can make yours by calling 501-224-2828.
There are still tickets left for the culinary programming events at Fayetteville Roots Festival. It continues to be the best culinary festival in the state, and this year looks no different.
Earlier this summer, a tragic accident left Capital Hotel beverage manager Ben Edwards paralyzed from the chest down. Little Rock’s restaurant community has banded together to help Ben with his recovery with a special fundraiser dinner event. Read all about it and purchase tickets to the event here.
Plenty of freebies up for grabs this week for Little Rock Restaurant Month. We’ve picked out some of our favorite offers at restaurants around town.
