Rumbles: kBird is Back, Merrick Fagan Joins Big Orange Team, Crawfish at The Faded Rose

The Little Rock food scene is a little brighter this week with the return of Richard Glasgow to kBird. Glasgow spent his traditional month away in Thailand, touring several towns and eating way more delicious food than most of us will in a year. Glasgow is still nursing some severe jet lag (it took me two weeks to feel right after my trip to India), which means this week is lunch service only, no dinner. Glasgow has promised some new dishes at kBird that he picked up over the past month; those should be rolling out over the next few weeks. For now, you’ll have to settle for some old favorite, like the Green Papaya Salad or the Pad Phrik King (PPK).
One of Little Rock’s better bartenders is pulling some double duty around town. Trio’s head barman Merrick Fagan will now spend his Sundays at Big Orange Midtown. Fagan will still remain in charge of the bar at Trio’s, but is using the opportunity to enhance his knowledge. He had no formal bartending education, and says it’s a way to expand his learning and skills behind the bar. For not having formal training, Fagan has worked wonders at Trio’s; his seasonal cocktail menus have been both festive and technically crafted. If you want to say hi to Fagan at Big Orange Midtown, stop in Sundays between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
It’s official: crawfish season is back at The Faded Rose. Every year, the David family opens crawfish season on Mardi Gras and then runs it every Wednesday evening throughout the spring. Each order gets a heaping pile of crawfish, plus potatoes and corn served in a traditional boil style. The half platter (1 pound) is $9.25, while the full platter (2 pounds) is $17.95. The next crawfish day at The Faded Rose is this coming Wednesday, and every Wednesday after, starting at 4 p.m.
There isn’t a faster-growing restaurant group in Arkansas right now than Tacos 4 Life. What started as a couple of locations in Conway and Northwest Arkansas has ballooned into a regional chain restaurant with locations planned in Texas, Tennessee and North Carolina. And of course, the growth will continue in Arkansas as well. The restaurant group plans to open up a North Little Rock location this fall near McCain Mall. Tacos 4 Life is leasing the land from Dillard’s and hopes the partnership will lead to future expansion opportunities in other markets.
