Rumbles: kBird Returns Monday, Valentine's Day Seating Still Available

After its traditional month-long winter hiatus, kBird in Hillcrest will return to normal business hours on Monday. The beloved Thai restaurant has been closed since Jan. 13 while owner Richard Glasgow took his annual pilgrimage to Thailand. As usual, Glasgow kept the kBird Instagram page updated with pictures and videos of his trip, and they are well worth checking out. kBird has been Little Rock’s best Thai restaurant for years, and a big reason for that is Glasgow’s fierce devotion to exploring and presenting authentic Thai food. Starting next week, kBird is open for lunch Monday through Friday; it will also serve a prix fixe meal on Thursday evenings and a traditional Khantoke family-style meal for Friday dinner service.
It goes without saying that you should already have your Valentine’s dinner reservation made. Most restaurants are booked up by now, so we won’t spend a ton of time going through Valentine’s dinner events. However, there are two unique events to bring to your attention. First is tomorrow evening (not Friday) at At the Corner. The popular downtown breakfast-themed diner is staying open for a Galentine’s Night Brunch. They won’t kick you out for being a guy, but this evening has been designed with ladies in mind. The wonderful women of At the Corner have planned a menu of sweet treats and champagne drinks for the occasion. They will also be giving away some specially curated spa bags. No need for reservations or formal dress; sweat pants and leggings are encouraged. Galentine’s Night Brunch is 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.
For Valentine’s Day itself, you might not have considered Rock Town Distillery for dinner, but if you haven’t made plans yet, it should probably be at the top of your list. Rock Town has invited Low Ivy Catering to create a four-course Valentine’s Day dinner complete with cocktail pairings. Courses include sumptuous-looking plates like Hog Jowl Carnitas on Ralston Farms rice grits and a cherry cheesecake “cloud” for dessert. Tickets are still on sale for $75 each; remember, that includes a cocktail for each course, so that’s a pretty solid value. Make your reservation ASAP to guarantee your seat. Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.
To say Central Arkansas’ food truck scene has improved lately would be an understatement. The city now boasts dozens of trucks serving high-quality food, so it’s encouraging to see other businesses offering them a place to set up. Case in point: Proof Bar + Lounge in Hillcrest is scheduling food trucks every Sunday right outside the bar entrance. This weekend, Holly Smokes by The Pantry chef Titus Holly will be serving up some barbecue for Sunday lunch. Then on Feb. 23, Low Ivy Catering brings its brunch menu to Proof, followed by Southern Standard on March 1 for a crawfish boil. Proof owner Gene Lee tells me he’s committed to bringing a food truck at least once a week to his business, so make sure you check the bar’s Facebook page to see who will be set up next.
After months of delays, Hubcap Burger Company is open on Cantrell Road. We stopped by for a First Look at the business that is continuing the Cotham’s tradition in a new way.
Authentic Mexican food can be hard to find in a city that loves its cheese dip and nachos. We visited Tacos Godoy to sample some amazing tacos with simple ingredients on homemade tortillas.
