Rumbles: kBird's Dinner Changes, Fassler Hall Turns 1, White Pig Inn Closes

With owner Richard Glasgow’s return from his annual one-month sabbatical in Thailand, kBird is open again and is making some changes going forward. The changes have to do with the dinner service. kBird will no longer be open for dinner Monday through Wednesday evenings as it has been for the past couple of years. The restaurant is shifting its dinner service to Thursday and Friday nights. The menu for dinner is also changing in a big way. The regular a la carte menu is going away and will be replaced with a three-course prix fixe menu on Thursdays. That three-course meal will cost $19 and will be available to go. Things get really exciting on Friday evenings, when kBird will host a regular Khantoke family-style dinner by reservation only. Tickets to the Friday dinner can be purchased that week for $49 per person. The khantoke dinner is among the most special food experiences in Little Rock, and to have it offered ever week is truly a treat. The new dinner service starts next week, with reservations to the Friday dinner going live at 2 p.m. Monday. kBird’s Monday through Friday lunch service is unchanged.
Fassler Hall has settled in so well to the downtown Little Rock neighborhood that it seems like it’s been around for years. However, this weekend the popular German-style beer hall will celebrate its first birthday. The party starts this Friday at 6 p.m. and won’t stop until the doors Monday at midnight. Fassler Hall has drink specials and some new brunch items planned, as well as baggo and bocce games in the courtyard. Those specials will rotate throughout the weekend, so make sure to ask your server for the latest deals. Congratulations to Fassler Hall on its first year in business.
In a story that has been widely reported over the past few days, the White Pig Inn in North Little Rock will close next week. On Friday, March 8, owner Greg Seaton will close the doors on the business for the last time. Though it has operated out of multiple buildings, White Pig Inn has been in business for 99 years. From now until they close next week, White Pig Inn will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and serve up a traditional barbecue menu for its fans.
Mardi Gras is coming next week, and plenty of Little Rock restaurants and bars are throwing celebrations for Fat Tuesday. Of course, the annual Mardi Gras parade is this Saturday in the SoMa neighborhood, and South on Main is holding a special Mardi Gras brunch to celebrate. Expect a fun, New Orleans-style brunch menu for that one. Next door neighbor Raduno is offering cocktail specials all day and providing king cakes from Community Bakery. And farther east, Rebel Kettle is hosting a Mardi Gras bash starting at 3 p.m. Rebel Kettle’s event features a costume party, $12 pitchers of Working Glass Hero and food specials.
The annual James Beard Award semi-finalists were released this morning, and a few nominees have Arkansas ties. Matt McClure (Hive, Bentonville) and Cassidee Dabney (Blackberry Farm, Walland, TN) are both former chefs at Ashley’s at the Capital Hotel and are up for best regional chef awards. There are others who will be familiar to the local food community either by cross over staff or doing events in Arkansas such as Alex Eaton (The Manship Wood Fired Kitchen, Jackson, MS), Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman (Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, Memphis), and Vishwesh Bhatt (Snackbar, Oxford, MS). The full list of semifinalists can be found here.  – Update by Greg
