Rumbles: No Kid Hungry Dinner Monday, Three Sams Rebuilding Continues, The Root Nears Dining Room Opening

News

If you haven’t purchased your tickets to Little Rock’s annual No Kid Hungry dinner, you’re running out of time. The dinner is Monday evening, and only a few tickets remain. South on Main is the host for the annual fundraiser, which features a charity auction and special drawings for prizes. Chef Matthew Bell is joined by Local Lime’s Ben Brainard, Sweet Love’s Kelli Marks, Ciao Baci’s Jeffrey Owen, Levon Wallace of Cochon in Nashville, and Kelly English from Restaurant Iris in Memphis. The event is always a fantastic evening, so please get your tickets soon.
Three Sams BBQ Joint is making good progress in its recovery from a fire in March that badly damaged the restaurant. The area where the fire started has been ripped away, as has the kitchen and back room. Crews will soon lay concrete floors and rebuild the kitchen area. The roof, which had massive holes punched in it to allow the smoke to escape, will also be replaced with a new metal roof. In the meantime, Three Sams is still serving its barbecue and pies from a food trailer in the parking lot Wednesday through Friday starting at 10:30 a.m. Be warned, the trailer is cash only, so plan ahead if you’re stopping by for lunch.
SO Restaurant has a new executive chef, Cody Rudd. Rudd comes from the Clinton Presidential Center/Forty Two, where he has worked since 2012. He also has work experience at Skye’s Bistro, 1620 Savoy, and Simply the Best, all under outstanding local chefs.
Speaking of construction progress, The Root Café is close to opening up its greatly expanded dining room area. Owner Jack Sundell tells me the dining room and second bathroom area could open in the next week or two, which will more than double The Root’s seating capacity. Once the dining room opens, crews will focus on getting the kitchen area updated. Sundell still hopes to be fully updated before the end of the year. Don’t forget, you can get a taste of The Root’s new dinner service every second and fourth Friday of the month. The second Friday is a ticketed dinner service, with tickets available at a link on The Root’s Facebook page. The fourth Friday is a traditional full-service dinner.
The Southern Gourmasian is joining Lost 40 Brewing for a special mystery menu night next Wednesday. For $20, guests will get two Lost 40 beers plus a shareable plate that pairs with the brew. One of the beers on tap will be Forest Queen Milk Stout, a limited batch that won’t last very long. Menu items will slowly be revealed on The Southern Gourmasian’s Facebook page leading up to the event.
We told you about kBird’s outstanding Thai “khantoke” dinner specials in August. Those dinners are back in November and December. The first three dinners (Nov. 5, Nov. 19, Dec. 3) will be ticketed based on reservations. A fourth dinner is a reward for contributing to a Kickstarter project by Farm Girl Meats. If you want tickets (and trust me, you want tickets), send an email to kBirdLittleRock@gmail.com starting at 2 p.m. this Friday. Include in your email the date you want and how many people are in your party. Be sure to set an alarm; last time, tickets were gone in less than 20 minutes.
A fire one month ago shut down Midtown Billiards, putting employees out of work and closing one of the town’s most beloved dive bars. We spoke to Midtown’s management and found out the bar could be back open in 2016.
It’s a rare talent that can make both sweet and savory foods equally well. We profiled a woman who is just that gifted in The 1836 Club’s Amanda Ivy.
It’s long been one of the city’s best breakfast and lunch spots. But over the past year and a half, Boulevard Bistro has staked its claim with a fantastic dinner service. We checked out the new fall menu here.
