Rumbles: No Kid Hungry Dinner Raises $70,000, Mylo Coffee Expansion Update, Round Mountain Coffee Grand Opening

News
Little Rock’s most important food event of the year has made a bigger impact than ever. Monday night’s No Kid Hungry dinner raised more than $70,000 to help fight childhood hunger, besting last year’s record of $65,000. This is the third year South on Main has hosted the dinner, featuring talented chefs and bartenders from Arkansas and beyond. This year saw Memphis chef Kelly English and Nashville’s Levon Wallace lending their considerable talents to the cause. Every penny raised at No Kid Hungry dinner events goes straight to No Kid Hungry, which supports public and private organizations in their efforts to make sure every child is fed.
The first pictures of Mylo Coffee’s expansion show plenty of progress is being made in the former Afterthought space. Stephanos Mylonas and his crew stripped the restaurant’s walls to the studs and ripped up the flooring over the past few months. However, the same exposed brick wall in Mylo’s dining room is still up in the new space. New floors are already going down, and teams have set up the framework to wall off the area that will hold Mylo Coffee’s expansion area. Once all is finished, a new restaurant and concert venue will operate next door to Mylo, featuring a menu centered around brick-oven cooking, craft cocktails and live music performances. That will happen sometime in 2017.
If you attended Harvestfest this weekend, you probably noticed the video production crew shooting in the area. The team was here to record an episode of The Cooking Channel’s Big Bad BBQ Brawl, featuring New York pitmaster Shannon Ambrosio. Ambrosio’s competition was none other than The Southern Gourmasian’s Justin Patterson, who was also working the festival in his food truck. Helping Patterson out with cooking duties was Beast Food Truck owner Gwen Jones. As for the contest, well, you’ll have to wait until the episode comes out to find out who won. Patterson’s episode will air in season 2 of Big Bad BBQ Brawl, though the exact date is still yet to be announced.
Conway coffee lovers will soon have a new place to get their fix. Round Mountain Coffee has held its soft openings and is ready to open its doors starting tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m. The shop is roasting its own beans and making espresso drinks as well as experimenting with some new beverage creations. They will also be selling coffee beans to take home. Round Mountain is on Prince St. in Conway.
Congratulations are in order to Yellow Rocket Concepts, which had a fantastic weekend at festivals around town. On Saturday, Scott McGehee and his crew won the 2016 World Cheese Dip Championships with Heights Taco and Tamale’s “Five Families” cheese dip recipe. Then on Sunday, McGehee and John Beachboard took their Lost Forty team to the Arkansas Times Heritage Hog Roast and won first place there. Props to both teams for coming out victorious in what must have been an exhausting but rewarding weekend.
And believe it or not, Lost Forty is anticipating this coming weekend to be even bigger for them. That’s because Saturday is the annual release of Nighty Night, the brewery’s imperial stout aged in three different barrels for several months. We had the honor of documenting the creation of this sensational beer ahead of its release party.
Looking for a vibrant, creative drink line-up? You might not automatically think about Trio’s, but that should change with the release of bartender Merrick Fagan’s eye-catching new cocktail menu that looks just as good as it tastes.
Arkansas farmers certainly don’t get the recognition they deserve. This week, we profiled Farm Girl Meats owner and farmer Katie Shorts and discovered her unique, natural approach to raising livestock.
Little Rock has a new lunch delivery option. Dayjenay is delivering hot meals around lunch time to the downtown area, we profiled it earlier today.
