Rumbles: Rock Town Gets Gold, Hogg's Does Lunch, Raduno/The Fold Food Drives

Rock Town Distillery has once again made its mark on the world stage, and this time it’s not for its whiskey. Rock Town’s Feast in the Field Gin won gold at the 2018 World Gin Awards this week. The gold honor came in the “contemporary gin” category, which recognizes gins from around the world that have some predominant flavor that isn’t juniper. Feast in the Field is a limited edition gin made from herbs and botanicals taken from Heifer International’s urban farm in Little Rock. The recipe included juniper, coriander, pineapple sage, basil, rosemary, rose petals, lavender, lemon grass, ginger root and anise. What’s more, a portion of the proceeds from every bottle sold goes to help Heifer International in its mission to end poverty and hunger around the world through agriculture and education.
Raduno Brick Oven and Barroom and The Fold are holding separate canned food drives this week to benefit the Arkansas Foodbank. Today is Raduno’s event; bring any canned food item to lunch or dinner service and get $1 off your choice of an appetizer or any draft beer. On Friday, your canned food donation gets you either $1 off The Fold’s cheese dip or house margarita. Only one discount per person will be taken at each location. The Arkansas Foodbank feeds more than 50,000 people each week, using a network of local agencies around the state to give purchased and donated food to those who need it most.
North Little Rock has a new lunch destination at a familiar business. Hogg’s Meat Market has added daily prepared lunch specials to its lineup. The butcher shop already has some quality meat on hand, so the move makes sense. Today, Hogg’s has ham with brown beans, cornbread and “oven-roasted taters” on the menu. All lunch specials cost $6.99 and include a salad and roll, which makes for a pretty nice bargain. Check out their Facebook page each week to see what Hogg’s will be cooking up.
It’s good to see a restaurant as unique as Kontiki African Restaurant succeeding this early on. Kontiki started out as a lunch-only business in Alexander, but high demand from Little Rock-based diners who couldn’t make it during the workday have led to a change in plans. Kontiki’s new hours are 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Kontiki specializes in West African food, specifically from Sierra Leone. Dishes include groundnut stew, fufu and okra, jollof rice, and cassava leaves with smoked fish.
Why this happens in February I’ll never know, but tomorrow is National Margarita Day. Checking around on the usual suspects in Little Rock, the only restaurant that seems to have a special event planned is at The Fold, where both the house and jalapeno margaritas will be $5 each. The bar team will also be preparing some special margarita recipes that will only be available tomorrow. I’d be willing to bet at least one other place around town will post some specials for the occasion, but either way, it’s a good excuse to enjoy a drink at your favorite local business.
