The temperature is starting to drop and the veggies at the farmers market are transitioning from juicy to earthy. Fall brings more than just new vegetables and leaf colors, it brings new menus at a number of Little Rock restaurants. South on Main is one of those, keeping with their tradition of seasonal menu changes.
Much of the menu is refinements to adjust to the changing season, a switch to squash soup and seasonal vegetables on dishes like the Ribeye Cap. Lunch at South on Main has for a long time been one of the best meals in terms of price vs quality in the entire city.
This menu change however lands some dishes that are sure to be instant favorites, and honestly belong on a southern restaurant menu. The big buzz here will be the fried catfish basket. If I was a better man (and I am) I would bet on this quickly becoming the top seller. It is a huge plate, filled with three healthy strips of fried catfish, golf ball sized hush puppies, a good stack of fries, and a cup of brown beans.
Also new is a roasted mushroom tart that looks amazing and provides a veggie option that can stand up as well as any item on the meat heavy menu. Smoked Duck takes the place of the duck confit, it is served up with SoM’s famous creamed greens that they honestly should sell by the pint. Finally a small, but significant change that we overlooked at first glance, the appetizer portion adds potato salad to the list of options. We have tried SoM’s potato salad before at private events and find it to be one of the best in the city, be sure to grab it next time you are out.
Overall it makes for a great new menu with plenty of diversity. South on Main has managed to refine the menu keeping the best of what was there and adding in enough instant favorites to keep lunch here looking like an All Star game. Lunch is served Monday – Friday, 11-2:30.
